Contemporary Dance

NEW INTRODUCTORY COURSE with Miss Gill Hall

Mondays 5:30pm-6:15pm

Ages 9+

This course has been designed by Miss Gill Hall who has studied many dance styles at NDC but now her focus is on this style.   Her love and dedication to Contemporary Dance is evident and after studying in London and gaining knowledge from some of the greatest Contemporary professionals, she's back at NDC where it all began... passing her knowledge onto young dancers.  We are delighted to have her leading Contemporary at NDC!

Dancers will learn from the very beginning how to 'stand', correct foot positions, balance, posture and the general basics of Contemporary Dance.  Dancers with experience in other dance styles will progress quickly through this course and into the various levels of class.

Beginner dancers: Once you have completed this course, Gill and her team will assess and advise of the next step on your Contemporary dance journey at NDC.  We have two or three classes designed to gain maximum development of the dancers.

OVERVIEW OF CONTEMPORARY DANCE

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements.

The style stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. This dance genre is often done in bare feet. Contemporary dance can be performed to many different styles of music.

Pioneers of contemporary dance include Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham. These contemporary dancers all believed that dancers should have freedom of movement, allowing their bodies to freely express their innermost feelings.

Our classes follow all these principals and are excellent for strength, suppleness and expression.
